NYCFC signs Goalkeeper Josh Saunders

New York City FC announced today that it has signed free agent goalkeeper Josh Saunders, a veteran of Major League Soccer since 2003.

“Having had the opportunity to work with and coach Josh previously in our careers at Real Salt Lake, I know what a valuable asset he’ll be to our Club,” said New York City FC Head Coach, Jason Kreis. “He is a proven player and champion in his position, having played on a number of winning teams in MLS. To have such an experienced player, and goalkeeper, will be a tremendous asset for our Club come our inaugural season.”

An American-born Puerto Rican international player, the 33-year old Saunders was initially selected in the fourth round of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes. After multiple loan stints with the then USL First Division Portland Timbers, as well as seasons with the Puerto Rico Islanders and Miami FC, Saunders made his MLS debut in 2008 with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Saunders then earned the starting goalkeeping position for the Galaxy’s 2011 season, allowing just 17 goals in 19 total regular season appearances en route to the club winning the 2011 MLS Cup Championship, and again helping Los Angeles to its second-straight MLS Cup title in 2012.

Before the inaugural New York City FC season kicking off in March 2015, Saunders will join Manchester City FC for the first part of its pre-season tour in Scotland from July 9th – July 17th, before joining the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL on loan until the end of the year.

“Getting an opportunity to join New York City FC and be part of what is being built for the fans in this city was something I could not turn down,” said Josh Saunders. “The chance to also rejoin Coach Kreis was also very exciting. This is a pivotal moment in my career, and I’m ready to get to work for the Club.”

Season tickets to see New York City FC’s inaugural season in MLS are on sale now. Call 855-77-NYCFC or visit nycfc.com/tickets to order online. Fans can also purchase their exclusive New York City FC gear at nycfc.com/shop.
Interesting. Coach Kreis is obviously familiar with him. Should be a good veteran presence in goal.

Today's the Day - World Cup Semi-FInal Viewing Party at Brother Jimmy's!

Don't forget - today is the day for the Third Rail's Semi-Final Viewing Party, co-sponsored with New York City FC itself!

Germany punched its ticket to the final in dramatic fashion yesterday with a decisive 7-1 thrashing of Brazil. Now it's time for Argentina and the Netherlands to step up; which one will win the right to face Die Adler in the Estádio do Maracanã on Sunday?

Our viewing party will be at Brother Jimmy's BBQ on 31st and Lexington in Manhattan. The match starts at 4:00, the party starts at 3:00!

We'll have beer specials provided by our friends at the Bronx Brewery. There will also be half-priced appetizers, prizes and giveaways, and the opportunity to watch the match with NYCFC staff.

There will be an opportunity to sign up for the Third Rail (if you haven't already), and a special raffle for Third Rail members.

See you there!

The Third Rail Unveils Its Official Logos

Just moments ago, the Third Rail unveiled its official logos, designed by local graphic artist Matthew Wolff, who first came to our attention with an outstanding NYCFC concept logo last year.

The primary logo is a raised Art Deco fist holding three orange lightning bolts against a dark blue background.

There's also a simpler secondary logo for certain applications where the primary is too complicated.

The fist can also be used by itself.

Finally, we have the official wordmark in isolation:

We'll be getting into the inspiration behind the designs soon, but for the moment I'm thrilled to finally make these public.

Almost immediately afterwards, the club tweeted out a high compliment:
Awesome.
